MNI BRIEF: UK-Canada Rollover Trade Deal is Workable- Trudeau

OTTAWA (MNI)

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Thursday endorsed a "rollover" trade deal to keep bilateral ties as the UK negotiates Brexit with the EU. Canada wants to maintain its unique role of having free trade with all G7 members and "we would certainly like to keep that," he said at a joint press conference with EU leaders. "It's fairly straightforward" and "we are very optimistic" on a rollover deal, he said.

EU President President Ursula von der Leyen, speaking about Brexit talks at the same event, said "we would like to see more progress" on the level playing field and fisheries. She again noted there are also 11 other files that must also be wrapped up, saying again she has confidence in the EU negotiator and is getting hourly updates.
