MNI BRIEF: UK Set For July 4 Vote As Sunak Calls Election

(MNI) London

The UK will go to the polls on July 4 to elect a new government after Prime Minister Rishi Sunak used his powers of Royal Prerogative to call an election at a time of his choice.

Although Sunak's ruling Conservative Party trail the opposition Labour Party -- headed by Keir Starmer -- by around 20 percentage points in the opinion polls and suffered heavy losses in recent local elections, he has decided now is the time to go to the country in an attempt to secure another term.

Parliament is set to be dissolved on May 30, with the election due five weeks later.
