MNI BRIEF: Won Weakens Ahead Of BOK Policy Meeting This Week

(MNI) Tokyo

A weaker South Korean won may add pressure on the Bank of Korea ahead of a monetary policy meeting later this week in which the central bank is expected to hold steady.

The won slipped 0.23% in Asia on Tuesday, according to data on Yahoo Finance.

Close observers of the BOK note that officials have assessed the risks of higher housing prices and financial imbalances as close calls against a pick-up in Covid-19 infections in the run up to the Aug. 26 meeting.

The BOK left its benchmark rate unchanged at an historical low of 0.5% in July.
