MNI BRIEF: U.S. Feb CPI 7.9%, Core 6.4%; As Expected

U.S. CPI rose 0.8% from a month earlier and 7.9% in the 12 months ended February, while core CPI rose 0.5% over the month and 6.4% over the year, the BLS said Thursday, both in line with market expectations.

Gas prices jumped 6.6% last month, accounting for almost a third of the monthly increase. Food index rose 1.0% and food at home rose 1.4%, the largest monthly increases since April 2020.

Shelter prices rose 0.5% in February and 4.7% over the year, accounting for 40% of the increase in core CPI, the BLS said. Used cars and truck prices retreated 0.2% after rising sharply over the pandemic, one of the few categories to decline in the month.
