MNI DATA BRIEF: Japan May Jobless Rate At 3.0% From Apr 2.8%

Japan's average unemployment rate stood at a seasonally-adjusted 3.0% in May, up from April's 2.8% and at the highest level since December 2020, according to data released by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications on Tuesday.

The total number of employed fell by 130,000 (-0.2%) m/m in May, after falling 260,000 (-0.4%) in April, and the number of unemployed rose by 100,000 (+5.2%) in May after rising 140,000 (+7.8%) in April.

The job-to-applicant ratio, a leading indicator of the employment market, stood at 1.09 in May, unchanged from April, according to data released by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare.
