MNI DATA BRIEF: Record Canada Mortgage Borrowing Gain in April

(MNI) OTTAWA
OTTAWA (MNI)

Canadian mortgage debt rose by a record in April, underlining risks outlined by the central bank in a fresh housing boom triggered by the desire for more space in the pandemic.

Mortgages grew CAD17.7 billion on the month, or by 7.8% from a year earlier, Statistics Canada said Friday. Industry sources have told MNI that supply chain shortages could push up housing prices and inflation further from what's already the fastest pace in a decade.
