MNI FX Positioning Indicator - Markets Closing USD Shorts

Markets Continue to Close USD Shorts as Uncertainty Rises

  • The USD net position has improved in recent weeks as uncertainty over the more transmissible Delta variant prompts speculators to trim longs in high beta currencies, which corresponds with more heightening equity volatility since the beginning of July.
  • This has prompted a net improvement in the USD position, with the net short shrinking by 22.8K to 72.1K in the week ending July 6.
  • In addition, the significant tightening in Chinese credit and liquidity has been weighing on risky assets recently, which could increase preference for the US Dollar in the near to medium term.
  • Speculators trimmed AUD, NZD and CAD most notably, while JPY and GBP net positions improved most markedly.
AUD Positioning Indicator holds close to multiyear lows
