MNI POLITICAL RISK ANALYSIS – US Daily Brief 08-04-22

Executive Summary:

  • The Senate voted yesterday to confirm President Joe Biden’s Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson. The vote passed 53-47 with Republican senators Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), Susan Collins (R-ME), and Mitt Romney (R-UT) voting ‘yes’ with all 50 Democrat senators.
  • The Congressional recess comes at a good time for the health of US lawmakers. Senator Raphael Warnock (D-GA) is the latest Congressperson to test positive for COVID-19 amid a Capitol Hill surge.
  • At a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing yesterday, Senator Jim Inhofe (R-OK) called for greater clarity on the Biden Administration’s National Security Strategy. ‘We only have a classified defence strategy, and we have no National Security Strategy. So how are we supposed to connect the dots between the strategy and the budget?’
  • Senator Bill Hagerty (R-TN) of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee is planning to lead a bipartisan congressional delegation to Japan next week to discuss heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
  • April 11: Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin will host Indian Minister of External Affairs Jaishankar and Indian Minister of Defence Rajnath Singh in Washington for a 2+2 ministerial in an attempt to lure the world's largest democracy away from Russia's sphere of influence.
