MNI POLITICAL RISK ANALYSIS – US Daily Brief 18-01-22

Executive Summary:

  • 12.00 ET/17.00 GMT: The Senate is back to debate voter rights.
  • Today or tomorrow, we will learn the precise mechanism that Chuck Schumer (D-NY) plans to use to bypass the filibuster. He could remove it completely or modify the rules by, for example, enforcing the ‘talking filibuster’. There is an assumption that if a Senator is compelled to actually filibuster rather than merely threatening to filibuster, it will become a less ubiquitous political tool in the Senate.
  • On Thursday the Senate Judiciary Committee will markup the American Innovation and Choice Online Act, proposed by Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Chuck Grassley (R-IA). The bill aims to force big tech companies into providing a fairer commercial environment for competitors on their platforms.
  • 58 percent of Americans think the economy is getting worse. A tracker of opinion overlaid with key political events of the past seven years shows that the tenure of President Joe Biden has been accompanied by a consistent public perception of poor economic management.
