MNI POLITICAL RISK ANALYSIS-Week Ahead 24-30 October

All timings subject to change.

Monday 24 October:

  • United Kingdom: Nominations close in the leadership contest for the governing centre-right Conservative Party at 1400BST (0900ET, 1500CET). Prospective candidates need the backing of 100 MPs to get onto the ballot and following the announcement from former PM Boris Johnson that he would not be entering the contest the strong favourite is now former Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak. If Leader of the Commons Penny Mordaunt cannot secure enough backers, Sunak will be elected leader without the need to go to a members’ vote and will take over as prime minister from incumbent Liz Truss.
  • United States:Incumbent Republican Governor Ron DeSantis debates his Democratic challenger Charlie Crist in the sole debate in the Floridian gubernatorial contest. Starts at 1900ET. While DeSantis is the favourite to win re-election, should Crist (who served as the state’s Republican governor previously) secure a shock in the in the 8 November midterms it would reshape the US political landscape, with DeSantis viewed as the only credible challenger to former President Donald Trump for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.
