MNI POLITICAL RISK - GOP Preps Retaliatory Actions Against ICC
Executive Summary:
- The Biden administration slammed an announcement from ICC prosecutor Karim Khan that he is seeking arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes in Gaza. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the warrant application, "does nothing to help, and could jeopardize, ongoing efforts to reach a ceasefire agreement."
- House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), who called the move “baseless and illegitimate,” is expected to hold a vote condemning the ICC which may include sanctions on the intergovernmental organisation. If Johnson moves a hardline ICC bill to the floor, Democrats will face another challenging vote which could further expose fissures in Democrats’ Israel policy.
- Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) will hold his doomed vote on the bipartisan border security bill on Thursday. Although it will fail, a vote will provide cover for vulnerable Democrats who are being hammered by Republican attack ads on immigration. It may also lay the groundwork for a potential raft of executive actions on the border from President Biden.
- Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen gave a major address to the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management this morning ahead of a key G7 meeting in Italy.
- Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation chair Martin Gruenberg is preparing to step down, in response to a report alleged a culture of harassment at the agency, potentially putting Biden administration efforts to tighten banking rules at risk.
- Poll of the Day: Fewer Black voters intend to vote for Biden than previous Democratic presidential candidates.
