MNI POLITICAL RISK- US Elections Weekly: Positive Vibes At DNC

US
  • The Democratic Party National Convention wrapped up yesterday with Vice President Kamala Harris formally accepting the presidential nomination.
  • Harris and her VP nominee Governor Tim Walz (D-MN) rolled out a re-branded Democratic Party that aggressively moved to coopt ‘freedom’ and ‘patriotism,’ two traditional Republican core values that Democrats feel empowered to muscle in on due to a perceived shift in the role of the state under Trump, and his VP nominee Senator JD Vance (R-OH).
  • Harris departs Chicago with momentum, both in strong polling and in voter enthusiasm. But there are some potential traps ahead: Independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is expected to suspend his presidential election campaign and endorse Trump; Harris’ problems with the economy could get worse; A prolonged war in the Middle East could undermine recent party unity, and perhaps most importantly: Harris’ surge in the polls has come without any unscripted exposure to the press. The GOP is betting that the wheels will fall off her campaign when the pressure ratchets up.
  • Inside: A full round-up of all the key polling data from the week and analysis of betting and prediction market trends.
