MNI China Press Digest April 29: Biden Progress, Faster Aging

MNI (Sydney)

The following lists highlights from Chinese press reports on Thursday:

  • The Biden administration has mobilized allies to jointly exert pressure on China and has made some progress in attempts to smear governance in China's Xinjiang Region as "genocide," the Global Times said in an editorial. The process of technological decoupling will only speed up in the future even as economic cooperation may expand, the state-run newspaper said. Catching up with the strength of the U.S. should be the decisive factor that will crush the U.S. illusion of containing China, it said.
  • China should initiate top-down planning to respond to declining birth rates and the accelerating aging population, including letting more farmers join the urban job markets, the 21st Century Business Herald said in an editorial. China should seek to keep migrant workers in cities, promote agricultural modernization and strengthen investment in education, the newspaper said. China should also encourage consumption and address expensive housing which prevents young people from marrying and childbirth, the Herald said.
