Morning Summary: Government Is Easing Restrictions Despite Rising Cases

HUNGARY
  • In Hungary, even though already over 3mil people have received at least their first vaccine dose, the 7D SMA of daily new cases continues to increase, up 400 to 5,400 in the past 4 days.
  • Restrictions were eased last Wednesday despite the objections of doctors. Professor Béla Merkely, the rector of Semmelweis University, recently said that some 5 million Hungarians will need to be inoculated to keep coronavirus case numbers constantly low in the country.
  • Based on the latest projections from PM Orban, 5mil people should be vaccinated (at least first dose) by mid May (one month from now), which is probably one of the major reasons the doctors were objecting an early lift in restrictions.
  • At 9.30 (London Time), Hungarian Cabinet Minister Gergely Gulyas holds his weekly briefing, with the government controversial plan to ease restrictions at a time when Hungary still maintains the highest Covid fatality rate in the world (BBG).
  • At 10.50, the NBH is expected to maintain its 1W deposit rate (weekly decision) steady at 0.75%.
