N. Korea Test-Fires Ballistic Missile As Second US Nuclear Submarine Arrives In S. Korea

NORTH KOREA

Japan Coast Guard says that North Korea may have fired a ballistic missile into the East Sea, with the details now being investigated. Yonhap News Agency runs similar comments from South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff.

  • Yonhap notes that North Korea's suspected missile launch comes two days after Pyongyang test-fired several cruise missiles into the West Sea and five days after the launch of two short-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs) into the East Sea.
  • Tensions on the Korean Peninsula have escalated as a second US nuclear submarine arrived in South Korea to resupply and docked at the Jeju island.
  • This ups the ante in regional military tensions after the arrival of another US submarine last week drew the ire of North Korea.
