N. Korea Tests Ballistic Missiles As Ruling Party's Top Brass Convene For Meeting

NORTH KOREA

North Korea test-fired two ballistic missiles today, according to information from South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) relayed further by Yonhap News Agency, and one of the launches appears to have failed.

  • Seoul said that two short-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs) were fired in the northeastern direction on Monday morning but one likely exploded in midair, with debris suspected to have fallen inland.
  • The launch came just after trilateral military exercises involving US, Japanese and South Korean forces, with North Korea threatening to take "offensive and overwhelming countermeasures."
  • The Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) Central Committee (CC) held a plenary meeting over the weekend to review policy record for the first half of the year. The mid-year meetings typically involve discussions of foreign and military policy.
  • Although communique from the latest CC meeting lacked detail, 38North circulated a piece noting that officials could have debated follow-up measures after Kim Jong-un's recent summit with Russia's President Putin.
