RUSSIA
  • Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and his Belarusian counterpart Roman Golovchenko will hold a Council of Ministers meeting of the Union State following an announcement by Putin over the weekend that Russia is preparing to station tactical nuclear weapons in the nation, escalating a confrontation with the US and its allies over the war in Ukraine.
  • Ten aircraft capable of carrying nuclear warheads have already been prepared in Belarus, and storage facilities for the weapons will be completed by July 1, Putin said as cited by Bloomberg. “We have not seen any reason to adjust our own strategic nuclear posture nor any indications Russia is preparing to use a nuclear weapon,” a spokesperson for the National Security Council at the White House said by email. Kyiv demanded a meeting of the UN Security Council in response to Russia’s announcement. NATO criticized Putin for what it called his ‘dangerous and irresponsible’ nuclear rhetoric, Reuters reported.
  • There are no major economic releases scheduled today. A slew of macroeconomic data including the current account balance, industrial production, retail sales and unemployment rate is on the docket later this week.
