New Talks On Coalition 'Constructive', But Still No Sign Of Deal

NETHERLANDS

New informatuer leading the Dutch coalition gov't talks Kim Putters has stated that the latest discussions were "constructive". However, the prospect of a coalition deal in the short-term looks unlikely. Geert Wilders, head of the largest party, the right-wing Party for Freedom (PVV), has said that he wants to “steam ahead” with talks. In recent days he has softened his stance on the Netherlands providing military assistance to Ukraine in an effort to garner support from other parties on the right.

  • The centrist New Social Contract (NSC) and centre-right People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) have both ruled out working with the PVV in a coalition. Amid farmers protests that have sparked a Europe-wide movement, the NSC agri spox has distanced his party from the PVV and BBB by voicing backing for a parliamentart resolution calllingfor "cuts to livestock numbers and the dismantling of large industrial farms."
  • There remain a number of scenarios on the table:
    • PVV form a minority coalition with the agrarian populist Farmer-Citizen Movement (BBB), propped up in a confidence and supply agreement by the NSC and VVD.
    • Coalition across the centre involving the centre-left environmentalist Labour-GreenLeft (PvdA-GL) alliance, the NSC, VVD, and liberal Democrats66 (D66).
    • If all talks break down with no chance of progress snap elections could take place. Based on recent polling the PVV would be in a position to strengthen their position. Averages of polling in Feb has the PVV winning 50 seats compared to 37 at present.
