New US Refining Doesn't Offset Closures since 2019

REFINING

Refining capacity in the US is set to grow next year, but not enough to offset the reduction since mid 2019.

US projects include:

  • Exxon Mobil’s expansion of Beaumont, Texas adding 250kbpd by mid 2023.
  • Valero Energy constructing a 55kbpd coker at Port Arthur, Texas.
  • Hovensa refinery in St. Croix is aiming for restart with 200kbpd capacity
  • Since 2019 US has lost over 1mbpd of throughput capacity due to closures, accidents and conversions to produce renewable fuels. The LyondellBasell 268kbpd Houston refinery is due to close by the end of 2023.
