NOAA Forecast Warmer Than Normal Temperatures In Northern US This Winter

NATGAS

Warmer than normal temperatures are expected in northern parts of the US according to the annual Winter Outlook from NOAA which could reduce heating demand and weigh on natural gas prices this winter.

  • Warmer-than-average temperatures are favoured in Alaska and from the West Coast northeast into the Northern and Central Plains, and then southeast and east into the Atlantic Coast from North Carolina to Maine.
  • The greatest chance (50-60%) for warmer-than-average conditions is in the more northern areas.
  • Weather patterns are being heavily influenced this year by an El Nino, which is in place heading into winter for the first time in four years.
  • The US is likely to see above-normal rainfall totals in the south which should help with the severe drought conditions in the southeast US, Gulf Coast region and Texas, which have contributed to record-low water levels on the Mississippi River.
