North American Leaders' Summit To Wrap Up Today

POLITICAL RISK

The two-day North American Leaders’ Summit in Mexico City will wrap up today with a trilateral session between US President Joe Biden, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and Mexico President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador at 13:30 ET 18:30 GMT.

  • Ahead of a meeting yesterday, Biden and Lopez Obrador pledged to build more resilient supply regional chains and work together to overcome issues surrounding migration and narcotics.
  • The White House said in a statement that the two leaders also discussed incentives to promote investment in semiconductor manufacturing along the border.
  • Lopez Obrador said the USMCA has been a valuable asset but the three leaders need to do more to develop the region's industrial base. "...in our ports of the Pacific, we still see how more ships full of merchandise are arriving. And this is something that’s growing, and they’re coming from Asia. And the question we’re asking here is the following: Couldn’t we produce in America what we consume?”
  • The leaders will give a joint statement following the conclusion of the summit with observers watching to see if progress is made on resolving a number of trade disputes straining the USMCA.
