NY Republicans Call On Rep George Santos To Resign

The Nassau Country Republican Committee has called on freshman Republican Congressman George Santos (R-NY) to resign in the face of allegations he misused campaign financing.

• Santos was elected to represented New York's 3th Congressional district, which makes up a large portion of Nassau County, in November with the backing of the committee .
• Santos has since admitting to fabricating large swathes of his personal and professional life and more serious allegations have come to light which could lead to a criminal prosecution.
• Joseph Cairo, chairman of the Nassau County Republican Committee said today: “I am calling for his immediate resignation."
• House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) told reporters a short time ago that he is unaware of the Nassau County statement but reveled that Santos will not serve on any key committees. McCarthy said yesterday that the GOP will deal with the matter internally.
• With the Republican majority in the House so fragile, any resignations of McCarthy loyalists will amplify the strength of the minority of conservative Republicans who blockaded the speaker ballot.
• Should Santos resign, it is difficult to see Republicans retaining the seat in a special election.
