Opposition CDP Leaders Announce Resignations

JAPAN

The leaders of Japan's main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party are set to step down, after the CDP failed to increase its representation in the House of Representatives, let alone challenge the incumbent Liberal Democratic Party.

  • CDP leader Yukio Edano announced his intention to resign and will formally notify party executive board at their meeting this afternoon. Secretary General Tetsuro Fukuyama is also set to resign after taking responsibility for "extremely disappointing" election results.
  • The CDP reduced its share of seats in the lower house and will only have 96 lawmakers, compared with 110 it had before the election.
  • Party leadership came under criticism as the pact struck by CDP leadership with several other opposition parties backfired. Analysts noted that the CDP's cooperation with the Communist Party may have turned off some anti-LDP voters.
