Opposition Leaders To Issue Joint Statement Ahead Of Talks With President

POLAND
  • Fresh updates on the process of government formation will continue to draw attention this week, with leaders of pro-EU opposition parties due to meet at the beginning of this week to forge a common line ahead of the upcoming talks with President Andrzej Duda. They are due to issue a joint statement on Tuesday morning in a bid to amplify pressure on Duda to facilitate government formation. The head of state will hold a series of meetings with delegates of all parties represented in the new parliament on Tuesday and Wednesday, ostensibly to gauge potential for viable coalition arrangements. It is widely expected that Duda will ask Law and Justice to propose a candidate for Prime Minister, even as they would almost certainly fail to win a vote of confidence in parliament, which would eventually pave the way for pro-EU opposition to form government - albeit with a delay.
  • Civic Coalition (PO) leader Donald Tusk will participate in a summit of the European People's Party (EPP) in Brussels this Thursday. There is speculation that he will use the opportunity to hold informal talks on the potential unfreezing of EU funds earmarked for Poland, but EU sources told RMF FM that the money would not be unlocked without specific reforms. Securing access to the funds was one of the core campaign pledges of pro-EU opposition parties.
  • DGP reports that the new government will likely rewrite the 2024 state budget by amending the current draft bill, as there will be no time to prepare a fresh one and get it approved by parliament. The newspaper suggests that the new administration could implement its campaign pledges in stages amid fiscal constraints.
  • Poland will report the following data today:
    • September Construction Output (BBG est. +5.9% Y/Y)
    • September M3 Money Supply (BBG est. +7.3% Y/Y)
