Overhaul Czar Will "Respect" PM's Decision As Coalition Heads Are Drafting Statement

ISRAEL

Israel's Justice Minister and the main architect of the judicial overhaul Yariv Levin said that he will "respect" Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's decision on further steps on the proposed reforms, while warning that stopping the legislation "may immediately lead to the fall of the government and the collapse of Likud."

  • Levin's rhetoric suggests that the prospect of halting the judicial overhaul has moved closer, given the official's previous rhetoric stressing the need to swiftly adopt all the proposed changes.
  • Ynet reports that heads of Israel's ruling coalition are currently drafting a statement, which may also include a proposal for a possible alternative outline of the reform, as the Prime Minister is expected to stop the legislation later today.
  • Kan reports that far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir told the Premier that if the legislation is stopped, he will resign from Cabinet but will continue to support the government from the outside to avoid a snap election.
