Panama Canal Share of US LNG Transit Falls as Suez Canal Rises

LNG

The number of US LNG cargoes crossing the Panama Canal hasn’t changed much from 2022 as LNG’s priority slot has remained intact but this will end on Dec 1 according to Bloomberg.

  • The Panama Canal Authority is limiting transits amid drought conditions with Japan and South Korea the buyers most vulnerable to the transit curbs.
  • There could even be a halt to the number of LNG vessels using the route in January when auctions for slots will no longer be held. The Cameron LNG project has become the top origin of US LNG shipments using the waterway.
  • The share of journeys via the Panama Canals has been falling since January but the share of Suez Canal transits has risen since June, likely from LNG being rerouted. The Suez Canal is likely preferred to Cape of Good Hope if an uncommitted cargo cannot find a buyer in Europe.
