Parliament Recalled For Afghanistan Debate, PM Delivers Statement 0930BST

UK

Both Houses of Parliament have been recalled from summer recess to hold a debate on the situation in Afghanistan. The (rather non-descriptive) motion before the House of Commons is "That this House has considered the situation in Afghanistan." Prime Minister Boris Johnson will begin the debate at 0930BST (0430ET, 1030CET) with a statement on the situation and UK gov't plans for dealing with the fallout of the collapse of the Afghan gov't and the Taliban takeover.

  • The debate will continue for five hours, with the PM expected to face anger and criticism from not only the opposition, but his own backbenches. A number of Conservative MPs, notably those who served in Afghanistan or spent significant amounts of time there, have voiced their outrage at the situation and the West's abandonment of the country.
  • Big questions for PM are how engaged are the US with the UK and other European partners in monitoring situation in Afghanistan (given that President Biden didn't speak to a European leader until last night suggests not very), how will the UK ensure the safe evacuation of British nationals in Afghanistan, and how many Afghan refugees will the UK take in.
