Parliament To Ratify Treaties With DPR & LPR Tuesday, Definition Of Borders Remains Unclear

RUSSIA

Russia's parliament will ratify friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance treaties with Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics on Tuesday, upper house Deputy Chairman Andrey Klimov said.

  • Klimov told Rossiya-24: "We are talking, of course, about those territories that are within the boundaries established today. Everything else is beyond the scope of legal actions,"
  • Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev had earlier called for recognising the separatist "republics" in their historical borders, which include swathes territory currently under Kyiv's control.
  • There is no definition of the borders of Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics in presidential decrees on their recognition, which leaves Moscow considerable room to interpret them as it sees fit.
  • The recognition of all territorial claims of separatist "republics" would further aggravate existing tensions, paving the way for the escalation of the military conflict.
  • Note that the treaties submitted to parliament for ratification provide for joint protection of the borders of Donbas "republics" and grant Russia the right to construct military bases in ORDLO.
