Peace Mission To Ukraine & Russia Concludes, S. Africa Still Wants To Host BRICS Summit

SOUTH AFRICA
  • African leaders wrapped up their peace mission after meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday. Their peace plan was met with little enthusiasm in both Kyiv and Moscow, fighting along the frontline escalated, while the mission itself hit multiple logistical snags. Most of President Cyril Ramaphosa's security team failed to make it on time to accompany the leader after their plane was detained in Warsaw. Poland's Foreign Ministry said that the plane was grounded because Ramaphosa's security detail were transporting undeclared persons and weapons without all necessary permits. Meanwhile, Ramaphosa refused to acknowledge the inconclusiveness of the peace mission and said that it would be measured on ending of war, while follow-up meetings with Zelensky and Putin were likely.
  • Following President Cyril Ramaphosa's trip to Eastern Europe, his spokesman reaffirmed South Africa's intention to host the BRICS summit in August and said that the leader must consult with his counterparts from the bloc. The Presidency reportedly confirmed to BusinessDay that it was working on finding a way to go ahead with the summit and was exploring options for in-person attendance of Russian President Vladimir Putin, despite an ICC arrest warrant being issued against him.
