Pence Frames Himself As Fiscal Conservative Ahead Of Likely Presidential Bid

Former Vice President Mike Pence has positioned himself as a traditional fiscally conservative Republicans ahead of an expected presidential campaign launch.

  • Pence said, contrasting with a bipartisan political orthodoxy in Washington, that cuts to Medicare and Social Security should be "on the table for the long term."
  • Pence told CNBC: "I respect [House Speaker Kevin McCarthy's (R-CA)] commitment to take Social Security and Medicare off the table for the debt ceiling negotiations [but] we've got to put them on the table in the long term."
  • Pence: "We’re looking at a debt crisis in this country over the next 25 years that is driven by entitlements, and nobody in Washington, D.C., wants to talk about it."
  • Pence’s position, which may also include raising the retirement age, puts him at odds with McCarthy as well as former President Donald Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) who have all pledged to maintain Social Security commitments.
