Peruvian President Castillo Dissolves Congress Ahead of Impeachment Vote

PERU

Peruvian President Pedro Castillo has announced the dissolution of the Peruvian Congress and enacted a nationwide curfew ahead of an impeachment vote which was due to take place against him today.

  • Castillo said in address: "...we made the decision to establish an emergency government aimed at establishing the rule of law and democracy, for which purpose the measures are issued: temporarily dissolve the Congress of the Republic and establish an exceptional emergency government.”
  • According to Castillo, a nationwide curfew will be enforced from 22:00 PET/ET 03:00 GMT and all illegal firearms must be turned in to police within 72 hours: "Whoever does not do so commits a crime punishable by imprisonment that will be established in the decree law.”
  • Local reporters are unclear over the legality of such a move with national media outlets, including El Comercio, describing the dissolution of Congress as a “coup d'état.”
  • Peruvian Congress has pushed back against the move with Alejandro Muñante, third Vice President of Congress, announcing that plenary session of Congress, scheduled to take place at 15:00 PET 20:00 GMT will be brought forward to 12:30 PET 17:30 GMT.
