PM Albanese Keeps Core Supporters In Key Positions In 1st Cabinet

AUSTRALIA

Australia's new Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has unveiled his first Cabinet appointments since taking office following the 21 May federal election. The core of the Cabinet is largely carried over from Albanese's shadow ministry, with Jim Chalmers becoming treasurer, deputy leader Richard Marles becoming deputy PM as well as defence minister, Senator Penny Wong taking the foreign affairs brief, and Senator Katy Gallagher the finance ministry.

  • Former leadership rival to Albanese, Sydney MP Tanya Pilbersek was the most notable demotion in the reshuffle, being moved from the education brief to that of environment and water minister. Pilbersek also lost the women's affairs brief to new Fin Min Gallagher. Pilbersek is replaced at eductation by NSW MP Jason Clare.
  • South Australia MP Mark Butler, a close supporter of Albanese and a key member of the Labor Party's leftist faction, retains the health portfolio. Right-wing faction member Chris Bowen comes in as energy and climate change minister - his reworking of Labor's climate change policies in opposition seen as a key factor in enhancing the party's electability.
