PM-Designate Invites Right-Wing Finns Party To Coalition Talks

FINLAND

Finland's Prime Minister-Designate Petteri Orpo has confirmed his invitation to the right-wing Finns Party as well as the social conservative Christian Democrats and minority interest Swedish People's Party to join his centre-right National Coalition Party in negotiations to form a majority coalition gov't.

  • Orpo: "Based on the government talks, I propose that the Coalition Party, the Finns Party, the Swedish People's Party and the Christian Democrats participate in the government negotiations. In the soundings, we sought a common view of solving the challenges facing Finland. I believe that with this line-up, solutions can be found." Orpo secured first place for his party on a platform of spending restraint and debt reduction.
  • Negotiations on forming a coalition will begin on Tuesday 2 May. This gov't formation would hold a majority in Parliament with 109 of the 200 MPs, providing a fairly comfortable cushion of support for the new PM.
  • This gov't would not mark the first time that the Finns Party has been included in gov't. Between 2015 and 2017 the party sat as a junior partner in a tripartite gov't with the National Coalition Party and the agrarian populist Centre Party under PM Juha Sipila. However, a gov't in this formation would be the most right-wing in Finland in a generation, with all parties apart from the Swedish People's Party hailing from the right of the political spectrum.
