PM Fiala Defends His Fiscal Consolidation Package

  • In an interview for iDNES.cz Prime Minister Petr Fiala defended the austerity measures announced by his government last week and vowed to stand by the "difficult compromise" which was negotiated over "many months." The Prime Minister reaffirmed the need to "put public finances in order" and said that his government will not give in to the pressure of any lobby. The austerity package has come under criticism from several quarters, as trade unions issued a strike alert while business lobbies cried foul over the planned reduction in state subsidies.
  • The Chamber of Deputies will resume session today. Elsewhere, Labour Minister Marian Jurecka meets with labour unions today to discuss the minimum wage.
  • There are no major local data releases coming up today, with April PPI due to cross the wires tomorrow morning.
