PM: Gov't Does Not See Need To Shut Down Country Again Due To COVID

Delivering a COVID statement in the House of Commons, Prime Minister Boris Johnson states that his gov't does not see the need at present to lock down the country once again due to rising cases and hospitalisations.

  • PM also confirms a return to pro-Omicron travel rules from 0400GMT Friday, adding that '... we will be scrapping the pre-departure test...we will also be lifting the requirement to isolate on arrival' pending PCR result. From this point, only a rapid lateral flow test will be required.
  • For the general population, PCR confirmatory tests will no longer be requited. 'We will be suspending the need to do a PCR to confirm the result of a positive lateral flow test'
