PM Johnson Forced To Apologise After Failing To Disclose Messages To Inquiry

UK

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been forced into offering a 'humble and sincere apology' for failing to disclose private messages in relation to the refurbishment of the prime minister's Downing Street flat.

  • The investigation into the refurbishment of the flat has been carried out by Lord Geidt. In the conclusions in the letter sent to the PM at the end of 2021 (link here), Geidt used strong language such as "plainly unsatisfactory", "of grave concern", "extraordinary ", "very unfortunate", "inherently unwise", "threat to public confidence" in relation to the affair.
  • The issue has been one of many dragging on the popularity of Johnson both within his party and among the general public. Polls continue to show his Conservative party trailing the opposition Labour party, with Johnson's support hit by the Downing St. refurbishment scandal, the 2020 Downing St. Christmas parties, the escalating cost of living crisis, and the impact of the wave of Omicron COVID infections.
