PM Johnson Under Renewed Pressure Regarding Lockdown-Breaking Gathering

UK

Prime Minister Boris Johnson faces yet another round of public and political oppobrium this morning as news emerges of what appears to be his Principal Private Secretary Martin Reynolds inviting Downing St. staff to an outdoor drinks party during a period of tight lockdown restictions in May 2020.

  • The exposure of an email from Reynolds will see the story that was the overwhelming contributor to a crash in polling support for Johnson's Conservatives in December 2021 return to the limelight. The message invited staff members to 'bring your own drinks' to a garden gathering in Downing St. during a period when official rules dictated that individuals could only meet up with one other non-household member outdoors or else face fines.

  • Johnson's continued leadership of the Conservatives remains in the balance. His decision not to impose new strict lockdown contitions in England amidst the Omicron wave of infections appeared to have mollified restive anti-lockdown backbench MPs.
  • However, should the continued presence of stories about lockdown breaking by those at the top of gov't hit Conservative support further (the drop in Conservative polling support in December coincided directly with revelations of lockdown rule-breaking) it could hasten efforts by Johnson opponents on the backbenches to find a new leader.
