PM Orban's Fidesz Still In Pole Position For Election Win

Latest opinion polling shows Prime Minister Viktor Orban's right-wing populist Fidesz Party remains in pole position to retain a majority in the National Assembly in the 3 April legislative election.

  • Republikon Poll: Fidesz/KDNP: 49.3% (+0.3), United for Hungary: 46.5% (+0.5), Others: 4.2% +/- vs. 16-18 March 2022. Fieldwork: 26-29 March 2022, Sample size: 800
  • There is a high degree of political risk surrounding the election. Should the final result declared by electoral bodies not match actual voting, or if one candidate refuses to concede, or should the vote be extremely close, it could result in significant public unrest.
  • Hungarian gov't has already lashed out at alleged foreign interference, with Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto decrying on Wednesday alleged “ongoing coordination between the Hungarian left and representatives of the Ukrainian government,”. Orban gov't seen as closest in EU to Russian gov't, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy having previously called for Orban gov't to clearly sever links with the Kremlin.
