PM Statement On Judicial Overhaul Postponed Amid Coalition Confusion

ISRAEL

Wires reporting that according to Israeli television, PM Benjamin Netanyahu's address to the Knesset (parliament) has been postponed amid chaotic scenes within the governing coalition of whether to postpone controversial judicial reforms. Netanyahu was due to speak to the Knesset at 1030 local time (0830BST/0930CET), but this has been pushed back.

  • The gov't is struggling to reach an agreement on postponing reforms (favoured by moderates in Likud, Shas and UTJ) or continuing (favoured by hard-lineers in Likud, Religious Zionist Party & Otzama Yehudit).
  • The Histadrut, Israel's largest labour organisation, has called for the judicial plan to be halted. Its chair Arnon Bar-David, has called for a general strike in opposition to the measures.
  • Amichai Stein at Kann: " [Otzama Yehudit leader] Itamar Ben Gvir to Netanyahu: If you halt the Judicial reform legislation, the government may fall apart."
