PM Suga's Approval Ratings Fall Further As Attention Turns To Olympics

JAPAN

Two of the latest opinion polls measuring the approval ratings for the gov't of Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga show a continued decline in support for his administration just months ahead of the Japanese legislative election, due by 22 October at the latest.

  • ANN poll: Approval for Prime Minister Suga (LDP, Conservative) Cabinet: Approve: 29.6% (-2.8), Disapprove: 46.1% (+3.4). +/- vs. 19-20 June 2021. Fieldwork: 17-18 July 2021. Sample size: 1,027
  • Kyodo News poll: Approval for Prime Minister Suga (LDP, Conservative) Cabinet: Approve: 35.9% (-8.1), Disapprove: 49.8% (+7.6). +/- vs. 10-12 April 2021. Fieldwork: 15-16 July 2021. Sample size: 1,065
  • Should the Olympic Games - starting this Friday - not provide a 'feelgood boost' to the PM's popularity it could see moves within his centre-right Liberal Democratic Party to look for an alternative candidate to run for PM in the election, with the party set to decide on a candidate in advance of the election date.
