PM Vote About To Begin, Thaksin Returns To Thailand

THAILAND

Thailand's bicameral National Assembly begins the vote to elect the next Prime Minister. The only candidate is former real estate tycoon Srettha Thavisin, nominated by the Pheu Thai Party (PTP) and supported by an eleven-party PTP-led coalition.

  • Just like in the first round, in which Move Forward Party leader Pita Limjaroenrat's candidacy was rejected, lawmakers are voting by roll call. A live stream from the parliament session can be accessed using this link (the broadcast is in Thai, but with intuitive graphics, including the vote count).
  • There is a good chance that Srettha will manage to make it past the threshold to become Thailand's next Prime Minister after securing support from pro-junta parties. His success effectively hinges on the votes of military-appointed Senators.
  • Meanwhile, fugitive ex-PM Thaksin touched down in Bangkok and was arrested on arrival. Due to health problems, he will be detained in a special medical ward. It is expected that he might apply for royal pardon soon.
