Poland's Law To Probe Opposition Draws Ire, Inflation & Growth Data On Tap

POLAND
  • Poland is set to face international pressure after President Andrzej Duda signed off on a bill establishing a parliamentary committee to investigate Russian political influence in the country between 2007 and 2022. The committee will have extensive powers, including the ability to effectively bar officials from holding public office. It is expected that the ruling party will use the new law to grill opposition leader Donald Tusk and other political rivals in the lead-up of a parliamentary election in October or November. Popularly called "lex Tusk" (the former PM's name in the context of a "Russian reset" policy was mentioned in the formal rationale for drafting the bill), the law has drawn widespread criticism from Poland's legal community, opposition politicians and abroad, with with the U.S. Department of State expressing "concern" about the law "that could be misused to interfere with Poland’s free and fair elections." Sources told Onet that Donald Tusk has not decided whether to attend hearings before the committee despite potentially facing hefty fines, while major opposition parties said they will boycott the committee's meetings. Although he signed the bill, President Duda has also asked the Constitutional Tribunal to verify its compliance with the basic law, albeit it is seen as unlikely that the top court would lean against the will of the ruling party.
  • Poland announced that it will close its border with Belarus for all trucks and trailers registered in Russia and Belarus from June 1. The decision came after Poland slapped sanctions on 365 Belarusian officials, with bilateral relations hitting new lows after the Belarusian Supreme Court reaffirmed an eight-year prison sentence for Andrzej Poczobut, a journalist and activist of the Polish minority.
  • The focus in Poland turns to a suite of local data, due at the top of the hour. The statistics office will publish flash CPI for March and final Q1 GDP. The median estimate for headline CPI is +13.4% Y/Y, according to a Bloomberg poll of economists.
