POLAND: Top Court Rules Probe Into NBP Chief as Unconstitutional

  • "Poland’s top court ruled that a parliamentary probe into the actions of the central bank governor is unconstitutional because it undermines the monetary authority’s autonomy." (BBG) 
  • Bloomberg write that the decision by the Constitutional Tribunal, whose own independence from politicians has been questioned by the EU, will make it more difficult for the government to investigate Governor Adam Glapinski. As a reminder, most of the judges sitting on the Constitutional Court were appointed by the previous administration, at least some of them in highly controversial circumstances.
  • Financial markets have largely been unaffected by the saga, with the Polish zloty and local equities unfazed by the latest developments.
