Police Chief "Wont Go Down for Contempt" for Not Arresting Zuma, Cabinet Mulls TERS Benefits

  • Police Chief Bheki Cele says he won't go down for contempt of court for not arresting Zuma as the ConCourt deadline expires at midnight tonight.
    • This follows further threats of violence from yesterday's court session as Zuma's lawyer said 'another Marikana' looms if police try to arrest Zuma – referring to the Marikana massacre of 34 miners by police in 2012
  • Cabinet meeting today will discuss the re-introduction of TERS benefits to support the economy amid level 4 lockdown with Cabinet to decide on which industries will benefit.
    • Cosatu said that an agreement was reached at NEDLAC to reinstate TERS, but could not confirm anything until after today's meeting. TERS has provided ~R60bn in support so far
  • The ANC has warned police that they cannot look toothless in the Zuma matter, but are concerned about the risk of violence.
    • Political Analyst Sanusha Naidoo says "the ANC seemingly still wants to engage with Zuma and accommodate him. They don't' want to use for or action that will unsettle him.
    • Whether he accommodates and respects the party is another matter. We are in unprecedented territory"
