Polish Government Favors Orlen Takeover of Schwedt Refinery

REFINING

Poland’s government would be in favor of Orlen SA taking over the stake in Germany’s Schwedt refinery, if Berlin decides to remove Rosneft’s stake in the facility, Poland’s the deputy climate minister, Milosz Motyka, told Bloomberg.

  • “I don’t know what decision Orlen’s new management will make,” Motyka said. “But the cold calculation suggests that ultimately such situation would be beneficial both for us and for the Germans.”
  • Germany’s economy minister Robert Habeck said last week Warsaw had pledged to supply crude oil to the refinery, according to a German government official.
  • Poland told Germany it could replace the whole Kazakh volume of about 1-1.2mtpa, in addition to the 1.2mtpa Schwedt already received via the Polish port of Gdansk, a government source said last week.
  • The government in Berlin needs to decide by March 10 at the latest whether to take over the Rosneft stake instead of renewing the trusteeship for another six months.
