Political Analysts Speculate Over Anterior Motives to Ramaphosa's "Slow" SANDF Response

SOUTH AFRICA
  • Having spoken with a number of political analysts with solid internal sources in the ANC, an interesting narrative is gaining more traction RE Ramaphosa's "weak or soft response" to riot action and failure to declare a state of emergency or send in more troops at the pinnacle of the unrest.
  • Some are now saying that the orchestrated attacks were designed by pro-Zuma loyalists to evoke a hard force military reaction from Ramaphosa and local security forces, resulting in racial tensions and extensive civilian deaths akin to the Marikana massacre.
  • This would become an international tragedy, with Ramaphosa (a leader whose mantra is anti-corruption and ethical governance) being forced to step down in the aftermath.
  • Analysts are now speculating that Ramaphosa was aware of this motive, and carefully/deliberately fell short of delivering the very response the pro-Zuma camp was after in its mini coup attempt.
  • Ramaphosa has now joined key officials making statements regarding the "orchestrated" nature of the attacks, and may see more information in this line of reasoning surface in the next few days.
  • While this theory seems to hold up on a number of levels, it still remains to be seen how the crisis will evolve as more evidence comes to light surrounding testimony from key instigators.
