Polls Tighten Ahead Of Crucial Election (1/2)

SLOVAKIA

The final opinion polls released ahead of the 30 September legislative election shows a race that is tightening in the last days of the contest. While only a small eurozone economy, the election is being closely watched in Brussels given the prospect of a pro-EU and pro-Ukraine gov't being ousted in favour of a left-wing eurosceptic administration that could interact with the Union in a similar manner to Hungary's PM Viktor Orban.

  • The populist eurosceptic Smer-SD of former PM Robert Fico has seen its lead over the pro-EU liberal Progressive Slovakia (PS) wane in the final polling. Crucially, neither will hold a majority in the National Council, requiring other parties to join them in coalition.
  • In the election campaign, Fico has stated that under his gov't Ukraine would not receive "a single round" of ammunition from Slovakia. Given that future EU aid packages for Ukraine need unanimous approval from member states, Slovakia turning from an advocate of support to a holdout would risk major divisions between Bratislava and Brussels.
