Poroshenko Bail Set At USD35mn As Domestic Rows Overshadow Russia Risk

Following his return to the country earlier today, former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has had his bail set at USD35mn following a court appearance where he was charged with high treason and supporting terrorism.

  • The row between Poroshekno and incumbent President Volodymyr Zelensky threatens to overshadow major concerns in Kyiv about the threat of a Russian military incursion into Ukrainian territory along its eastern border.
  • Poroshenko's support base is among Ukrainian nationalist supporters in the countrys western regions that are strongly supportive of closer links with the EU. Poroshenko and his supporters have criticised Zelensky for his alleged 'soft' stance towards Moscow.
  • With Zelensky's public popularity slipping, Poroshenko's allegations that his prosecution comes at the behest of Moscow comes at an inopportune time for the gov't in Kyiv.
