Positive Rhetoric Emerges After First High-Level Meeting Of 2023

EU-UK

Somewhat unexpectedly, a joint statement has been released by the UK and EU following a working lunch involving EU Commission VP Maros Sefcovic and UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly and Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Heaton-Harris.

  • The statement read that the "Meeting took stock of work to find joint solutions to the concerns raised by businesses and communities in Northern Ireland [regarding the Northern Ireland protocol]. The meeting was cordial and constructive."
  • "They agreed that while a range of critical issues need to be resolved to find a way forward, an agreement was reached today on the way forward regarding the specific question of the EU’s access to UK IT systems. They noted this work was a critical prerequisite to building trust and providing assurance, and provided a new basis for EU-UK discussions. The two sides will take stock of progress made on Northern Ireland Protocol on 16 January"
While the statement is light on details, it continues the positive rhetoric that has emanated from both sides in recent months following a deterioration in relations during the end of PM Johnson's time in office and Liz Truss' short tenure.
