Pres. Raisi-SCO Can Defy Washington's 'Unilateralism'

IRAN

Speaking at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO)'s leaders' summit in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi states that, "SCO cooperation can defy Washington, D.C.,'s unilateralism".

  • Says that Tehran 'gives priority to North-South Transport Corridor'. This interconnected route of sea, land, and rail transport links runs from Moscow, Russia in the north to Mumbai, India in the south, and cuts the circuitous sea route for goods via the Suez Canal.
  • In an interview with Al Jazeera, Raisi stated today that reaching an agreement on the Iran nuclear deal would require long-term guarantees from the US on the removal of sanctions. Raisi: “Regarding the guarantees, if we have the trustworthy guarantees, and we have the lasting removal of the sanctions, [...] for sure it is possible to reach agreement,”
  • Difficult to guarantee long-term removal of sanctions, given that US gov't policy could change dramatically with a change of administration in Washington. A prospective return to the White House of former President Donald Trump would almost certainly see the US withdraw once again from a Democrat-negotiated nuclear deal.
